In the fall of 2007 a growing coalition of 32 secondary schools from across the east coast modeled efforts based on the precedent set by American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment and the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement by collaborating in competitions for decreasing electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, fostering campus sustainability practices, and establishing school-wide policy. The Green Cup Challenge (GCC) began three years ago between 3 schools (Exeter, Lawrenceville, and Northfield Mount Hermon) and has developed rapidly. Worcester Academy joined the GCC in the winter of 2008 when it decreased its electricity use by 10% over the four week competition. For the 2009 GCC, there are approximately 150 schools particpating in regional sections.
